Organic bread rant and stuffed romaine leafs

Yesterday I made a loaf of whole wheat bread. I refuse to buy store bought. Around here a loaf of organic bread costs around $5. Even the kind without high fructose corn syrup is pricey.
That's why I bought my bread machine. I can make a loaf of bread (all natural) for about $2. And now I can make organic jam too. :)

Just a side note: I am not perfectly organic. However, I do try to stay away from processed foods, and foods with artificial ingredients. I also try to buy meat and dairy organic, or at least without hormones and antibiotics. I am also picky about my produce. When I buy non organic produce I stick to a list of those that are low in pesticides. The ones that are high in pesticides, I do purchase organic.

After baking the bread, my husband and I went and watched Martians vs. Aliens in 3D and ate dinner at the Pita Pit.

For lunch today I made what my husband calls, "One of Shawnee's creations." I didn't know what I wanted for lunch, so I just made something up. I love doing that!

I grated two whole small carrots, chopped up a 1/4 of an avocado and mixed it with a cup of brown rice, a splash of soy sauce and about 2 tbsp of sweet Chile sauce. And then I stuffed three large romaine leafs.

Surprisingly, it was absolutely delicious. My husband even liked the rice mixture (he's really picky). Though, he said he would rather have the rice warmed, but I liked it as a cold salad.

For a list of produce that is either high or low in pesticides please visit http://www.foodnews.org/ for a printable version. I laminated mine so I can take it with me when I grocery shop.

  1. Those stuffed leaves look delicious, what a gret idea. I will have to make something similiar, I have some left over brown rice in the fridge.

  2. Yeah I was suprised that they turned out so well. For lunch today I made brown rice with toasted almonds and cashews. I bet some nuts of some sort would go well with the "stuffed leafs." Thank you for checking out my blog!
